Organising your storage unit like a pro: hacks for maximising your space

Whether you’re using your Salisbury storage unit for personal items, business stock or seasonal gear, how you organise your unit makes all the difference to how effectively you can use it. A well-organised space means quicker access to what you need, better protection for your belongings and no stress when you need to find that one box you thought you’d never need again.

Here are our top tips and clever hacks to help you organise your storage unit like a pro and make the most of every square inch.

1, Pack your stuff in clear containers

Cardboard boxes tend to be the go-to for storage, but consider using clear plastic containers instead. They’re stackable, durable and you can see exactly what’s inside without having to open each one. It’s a small upgrade that can save you huge amounts of time later on.

2, Make labels your best friend

Whether you use clear containers or opt for old-fashioned cardboard, label every box. It’s amazing how easy it is to forget what you packed, even a few weeks later.

Use waterproof markers and durable labels so your organisation system holds up over time. And make sure every box is clearly labelled on multiple sides, not just the top. Include both a broad category (like ‘Christmas decorations’) and the specific items inside (like ‘tree lights, tinsel, baubles’).

3, Create a simple storage map

Before you start piling things into your unit, take a few minutes to plan the layout – and document that plan to help you out in future. A basic map or sketch of your unit’s contents can save endless frustration.

Place a copy of the map near the entrance to the unit in a plastic sleeve or clipboard and keep a photo of it on your phone just in case. If you’ve labelled or numbered your boxes and listed what’s in each one, the map will help you find the one you’re after.

4, Build an aisle

Resist the temptation to fill your storage space from floor to ceiling right up to the door. Instead, leave a narrow aisle down the middle so you can access boxes at the back without having to move everything.

This little bit of planning pays off big when you’re retrieving or checking something you stored months ago.

5, Store items you’ll need near the front

Think ahead. What might you need soon? Seasonal decorations, paperwork, stock for your business or baby clothes for a second child – whatever it is, keep those items near the front of your unit for easy access.

Less-used or long-term items, such as archived documents or old furniture, can go towards the back.

6, Think vertical – but safe

Take advantage of your unit’s full height by stacking items vertically. Use sturdy shelving if you have it – metal freestanding units work well here – and keep things accessible. Heavy items should go at the bottom, with lighter ones at the top. But don’t stack too high unless you have proper support to avoid accidents or damage.

7, Disassemble furniture where you can

Large furniture can take up lots of space unnecessarily. Where possible, take apart bed frames, tables, chests of drawers and other bulky pieces to store them as flat as you can. Don’t forget to keep all the screws and fittings in clearly labelled bags, and tape them to the main item they’re needed for so nothing gets lost.
